The 5th National annual training and development weekend will be held at the usual venue of Lough Derg House, Dromineer County Tipperary on 19th and 20th of November. New members welcome. Inquiries to Conor EI4JN, John EI7IG.
On October 7th and 8th AREN will take part in an multi-agency exercise on Valentia Island, Co. Kerry run by Inter Agency Emergency Management Office. Contact Conor, EI4JN for further information.
Recently, five AREN members from four different counties assisted at this years Sean Kelly Tour. AREN assisted in setting up the control center, provided asset tracking and live weather reporting from the mountains.
A prototype Internet-of-things based tracking device developed by John, EI7IG was tested on the event. John subsequently presented a paper on project at the ARRL/TAPR conference in Florida last month.
On the weekend of the 18th and 19th of April the Amateur Radio Emergency Network held a training and development event in Dromineer County Tipperary. Members enjoyed a mix of indoor and outdoor activities with Winlink, Fldigi (NBEMS), message handling, navigation skills and go-kit demonstrations to whet the appetite.
AREN would like thank Declan EI2GE of the Lough Derg House & Lake Cafe for accommodation, Denis Dillon of Shannon Sailing for the training facilities and especially the members for giving of their time and making the trip to Dromineer.
It is planned to have a training weekend over the 13th and 14th of November on the shores of Lough Derg. This central picturesque location has been popular with other Voluntary Emergency Services for training and social activities.
Attendees can arrive on Friday night or Saturday morning.
Saturdays activities will include practical training and a taste of GlobalSET. It will wind down with a tour of the local RNLI station followed by dinner before moving on to the Whisky Still bar for ‘craic agus ceoil’ with local trad’ musicians.
An afternoon finish on Sunday will ensure you are home early that evening. Our host, Declan EI2GE, has kindly arranged generous rates for accommodation and meals. Full details will be circulated to members in due course.
The AREN Annual meeting took place last weekend in Clonmel County Tipperary. The agenda included:
- Review of previous years activities
- Update on the Major Emergency Management Process
- Update on training materials
- Update on ARENs use of maps and mapping data.
- IARU HF emergency operating procedure workshop
- APRS workshop
- Update on use of NBEMS and Digital Modes on shortwave NVIS
The AREN Mobile Command Post (MCP) was in attendance for everyone to inspect. and a a wide ranging discussion on various aspects of Emergency Communications was had. Many thanks to all who participated and I look forward to working with everyone during 2010.

All AREN members are requested to attend the meeting in the Clonmel Park Hotel, poppyfield retail park, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. The meeting will be commencing at 10am Saturday the 6th of February, and is scheduled to finish at 5pm.
Any non members are welcome to attend, though please contact John, EI7IG (contact details) beforehand to let us know, as we have to indicate numbers to the hotel in advance.
On a recent trip to New York, John, EI7IG, met with Charles J. Hargrove, N2NOV. New York City ARECS/RACES Citywide Radio Officer/Skywarn Co-ordinator, and his wife Karen, N2ZYF, to discuss various aspects of Emergency Communications.
Charles was involved in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 where the Office of Emergency Management requested that their organisation provided communications for the Red Cross. The wide ranging discussion covered all aspects of emergency communications. Charles, gave great insight into how their Emcomm Group operates from an organisational, training and operational perspective. John, EI7IG related how AREN as developed over recent years, and has engaged in demonstrations, exercises, and indeed some joint events with other organisations.
Discussions included the APRS and voice repeater networks, their use in AREN events, the recent donation of the trailer and the ongoing work to convert it for use as a Mobile Command Post. It is planned to keep the communications links open for further exchange of information in relation to Emergency Communications.
Interestingly Charles and his partner have roots in the Waterford and New Ross area and were in Ireland earlier this year.
EI2GN, EI5GPB and EI7IG in Cork last weekend. The meeting took approximately 5 hours with a full agenda. Out of that we now have a new Information and Communications Officer, Laurent, EI9JV, along with a host of action items for the committee to work through in order to further the goals of the group through 2009.
The AREN committee met in Cork on Sunday the 14th of September. Items for discussion included activities since April, new members, the appointment of Assistant Co-ordinators, November SET, winter training nets, information gleaned from the recent SEVESO Seminar and Training Day and planning for next years AREN meeting.
On Sunday 11 November, four AREN stations participated in the IARU Region 1 Emcomm Party on the air. This was the third simulated emergency test of its kind.
Operators were, Conor EI4JN, Tim EI5GPB, John EI7IG and, Declan Ei9FVB, using call-signs EI0RENE, EI1RENE, EI2RENE and EI3RENE respectively.
Conor operated from a hilltop site at coast location in South West Kerry, Tim from his home station in Baltimore, John from his home in Tramore and Declan from his home in Cork.
Messages we relayed throughout the Region and beyond using all the Centre of activity frequencies, except for 15 metres, which was not open on the day.

The AREN Winter NETS will reconvene on the first and third Wednesday of each month for training purposes on 3.690Khz, with an alternative frequency of 7.099kHz at 2130Hrs local beginning 21st November. This is a members only net. Non members may call in with reports at the end of the net when invited to do so by the Net Control Station. Full details will be circulated to members in due course.
The AREN stand at the recent Waterford rally was well received. The Demonstration included APRS and Pactor 3. One of the stations set up for the day was used to call into the IRTS 80m news.
AREN will also be represented at the upcoming Mayo Rally.
